FURY STRIKES MYANMAR

Myanmar

A devastating cyclone hit the Southeast Asian nation of Myanmar (formerly Burma) on May 3.  Winds up to 195 kph (120 mph) brought flooding and high tidal waves.  Homes and businesses were destroyed in a matter of minutes.  The entire infrastructure of many communities was destroyed.  Casualty numbers are rising by the day—at present 100,000 people are feared dead.  News services report that political infighting is preventing many foreign aid agencies from making shipments of needed food, clothing, and supplies to Myanmar.

Myanmar is directly in broadcast range of one of World Christian Broadcasting’s antennas currently being erected in the Indian Ocean.  If we were already on the air, we could be making significant contributions to the aftermath of such a tragedy.  Even though many of their local broadcast facilities are not operational now, people listening to our shortwave programs

  • could be receiving medical information.  After a major devastation of this magnitude, many of the deaths come from diseases spread through impure water and food.  Timely broadcasting could provide warnings about what people should avoid.
  • could be hearing the location of relief centers.
  • could be receiving instructions as to what local communication facilities still exist.
  • could be receiving emergency phone numbers.
