TeamViewer: Software That Connects Us!

My name is Kok Hai Tan and I am the Director of Communications at World Christian Broadcasting (WCB). One of my main roles at WCB is to oversee and maintain the corporation’s information and networking systems. I am also the Systems Administrator which involves maintaining our web pages, emails and other internet traffic.

The concepts of "sharing with" and "assisting" others are strongly emphasized in Christianity. For this reason I love to do research and look for reliable, and genuinely FREE, computer software, applications and programs. I enjoy sharing and introducing them to others. 

In my profession, I have learned that troubleshooting computer problems comes with many challenges. Not only must one deal with the user’s level of computer knowledge issues, but he must communicate with users in layman (simplest) terms—especially to those who have very little knowledge about computers. For example, basic terms such as “download” vs. “upload” are considered very technical to those who barely know how to turn on and turn off computers. These terms make them nervous.  

Sometimes I receive calls from friends, and even a friend’s friend, or even a friend’s friend’s friend (at times children) asking for help to resolve computer application problems. When users know how to describe their problems and some basic technical knowledge, and they know what they want to accomplish, most of the time problems can be resolved over the phone. However, when users have no clue of what’s going on with their computers, not knowing the different keys (return or enter key, function keys, etc.) and have practically no knowledge about using any of the applications, this makes it very hard to resolve problems over the phone. In this situation I would need to show them by connecting to their computers REMOTELY. Finding a FREE software that could perform computer-to-computer connection over the internet was very challenging. Although there are many applications I could apply, many of them are technically cumbersome while others must be purchased.

Hooray!  I finally found a software program that is FREE for non-commercial users. This program is called "TeamViewer" and in my opinion it is worth mentioning and sharing with others. It is a remote access application/program which allows a person to connect remotely into another computer system via the internet. What is "TeamViewer"? Now you know about the existence of the program that will allow you to remotely connect and access your own or other computers (with the permission of the computer owner). In layman terms, "TeamViewer" provides us the connecting tools for computer users to share applications as well as to view each others' computer screens over the internet. Yes! Even children and people with little computer skills can do it!
